Abstract


The use of an induction furnace for recasting unused aluminum scrap is a way to overcome the increase in aluminum waste and the use of fossil energy. The advantages of an induction furnace such as natural stirring (stirring), clean smelting, more efficient energy, and others will improve the quality of castings from aluminum waste. Improving the quality of castings can also be done by adding a copper alloy (Cu) and providing treatment in the form of holding at the time of melting or hold-melt for a certain period of time in an induction furnace. In this study, AlSi scrap was re-melted at a temperature of 500 C with an induction furnace. When AlSi had melted then 4% Cu was added and increased the induction furnace temperature to 700 C while being given hold-melt treatment for 0, 30, 60, and 90 minute. As the hold-melt time increases, the tensile strength and hardness of AlSi +Cu increase, the increase is due to the stirring process in the induction furnace which makes the Cu more evenly distributed so that the alloy becomes more homogeneous, besides that the longer the hold-melt time makes Cu more dissolved so that the grain size gets smaller
