Abstract

Microwave Hydrodiffusion and Gravity (MHG) is an innovative method of extraction and more environmentally friendly microwave extraction method for extracting essential oils. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of microwave power (450, 630 and 810 watts) and material pretreatment in the form of curing (6, 9 and 12 days) on the yield of the essential oil produced. The highest yield of nutmeg flesh essential oil was obtained by applying 630 watts of microwave power and curing for 12 days which was 0.0388% and the lowest yield was obtained at 450 watts of microwave power and 6 days of curing was 0.026%. The yield produced was less than the steam distillation method, which was 0.1%. The water content of nutmeg flesh of 89% by weight is one of the factors that effect of the less yield. High water content caused the volatile components of the volatile oil components to be hydrolyzed. The extraction time used in this extraction process is shorter than the steam distillation method, namely 1.1 hours’ vs 10 hours with less waste than conventional methods.
