Abstract

Indonesia is a country that is very rich in cultural heritage and abundant in natural resources, one example of Indonesia's wealth is that there are many types of batik and other fabric crafts and the presence of various types of plants that can be used as natural dyes. Natural dyes or natural dyes are dyes that come from a part of a plant or animal part, such as from the roots, stems, to the leaves. Natural dyes have a weakness, which is easy to wear off, therefore natural dyes need help from a process called fixation. Fixation is the process of locking or sealing a dye that has stuck to the fabric fibers. In this study, water glass is used as a fixer. Waterglass is soft and sticky and made of melted sodium silicate crystals. This study aims to determine the final result using waterglass fixation and to determine the process of wearability, tensile strength, elongation and absorption capacity of cotton cloth that has been fixed using waterglass. The end result of using waterglass fixation on cotton cloth using natural dyes in the dyeing process is quite good, only less in the test section for washing with soap. However, there is still a solution to overcome this problem, namely by using lerak water as a washing material. In the fading test process using gray schale and staining schale, all variations of fixation time get the same value, namely 2-3 (less) in the gray schale test and 4-5 (good) in the staining schale test. In the process of testing the absorbency of the fabric, all time variations get a value above 50%, indicating that the results of using waterglass fixation are quite good. The final conclusion contains about testing the strength and elongation of the fabric, the best results are obtained, namely the sample with a variation of the fixation time of 15 minutes.
